I agree with another reviewer, Chelsea P, who said "The crust of the pizza tastes [like they use the breadsticks from a Pillsbury can and add butter and rosemary.]" I thought the EXACT same thing! It had a yellowish hue that I've never seen in pizza dough and it was way too light and fluffy to be cornmeal. I'm certain you're right, Chelsea! Our family ordered 2 medium pizzas and 4 sodas. It cost $44. I thought that was quite pricey for counter service and average food. The Bridge museum upstairs was cool. Mackinaw City is full of other dining options. We'll be exploring those next time.

I thought I've had every type of pizza being from the pizza capital,"Columbus OH", but man this pizza was SO GOOD!!!! The homemade dough tasted like heaven. Honestly that made the pizza for me. Any place that takes the time to perfect that crust is alright with me. The toppings were just a bonus. Hands down best I've had in awhile. This will be my go to place for decades to come "Pure Michigan" maybe I say "Pure Heavenly Deliciousness".

Pizza was great! Beer was cold. Probably wouldn't order the bread sticks again. Overall good expierence. Museum upstairs neat.

This is a good pizza place. We ordered a veggie pizza and it was marvelous. After reading the bad reviews we were a little timid but the moment we took a bite it was heaven. Do check this place out and do not fall for the bad reviews.

I love pizza, but I really don't like reviewing it. Everyone has such a different take on crust, sauces, toppings, level of acceptable grease, and not to mention the nostalgia of eating at the same place you did as a kid. Mama Mia's certainly has a vice grip on the warm fuzzy feeling but coming from a first timer I was not impressed. The crust tasted like the pre-made 2 pack you pickup at the grocery store. The toppings were good, not great. They were a little lite on the quantity cheese. The sauce... Well the sauce was really quite good. If that comes from a can I want the name. The price was really high for counter service pizza. Even for being in a tourist hotspot the size and quality do not match the sticker. If this was a pizza buffet my review would be much higher. However, since I got the buffet taste without the gut ache and strong desire to nap, I leave not fully satisfied.

The pizza is ok. Atmosphere is tourist trap. You eat on paper plates. But I trek here annually to visit my father. He helped build the Mackinaw bridge and the bridge museumat Mama Mias is where his soul lives. Here you would have found his tools, union books, medical kit, emergency blanket, original hard hat, and safety belt. But they burned and were destroyed in 2006. Instead you'll now see another union book of his, an article where he was interviewed for the 40th anniversary of the bridge and a replacement hard hat.I just dropped them off so they should be on display soon. It's still where my father lives. So stop and visit and look for Bill Babinchak and tell him that I miss him desperately.

Not impressed. Very low quality ingredients and a pretty big wait. Very up-north in style, but the cheese is definitely not 100% real cheese and the sauce is too sweet. I'd rather have Little Caesar's hot and ready for $5 than pay $20 for a large pie at Mama Mia's.

    (2)
  • Tim D.

The pizza is worth the wait, which could be considerable given the care they put into each pie. Garlic cheese bread will keep the whiners quiet until the pizza is ready. The museum is still a little bare, but it is understandable given the fire several years back. The movie feels dated with the 70s-esque voice talent.

Pizza is nothing special, but this is a good place to take a bunch of tired kids after a long day on the Island or playing around in Mackinaw City. It's noisy, relatively inexpensive (for the area), and the food is delivered fairly quickly. You place your order at the counter, then pick a seat and wait until your number is called. Note that this is one of those rare places where you can get a good platter of fruit for the kids to share, too. Beer, wine and mixed drinks must be ordered separately from the bar.

When in touristy places like Mackinaw City, my standards drop significantly. Having said that, this place wasn't as bad as I feared. Sure, it was far from being the best pizza place I've ever been to, but we all had a good time. Our party of 3 split a large, half cheese, half Hawaiian pizza. Everyone agreed that it was tasty, though it was overpriced. Then again, their target audience is obviously tourists, so being overpriced is somewhat expected. The service was friendly, I was pleasantly surprised that the staff went around asking customers how they were doing. If I found myself looking for pizza in Mackinaw, I'd likely come back here again.

I have been coming to Mackinaw City for over 22 years. This is my 2nd stop. Bakery is always my frist. People need to stop sitting their standards so high. Better then the chain restaurants back home.

  • Rusty Y.

The pizza is good. It is not like OMG awesome, but it was better than average. The service was good. It it not a typical sit down restaurant. But after a long day of site seeing it was a nice stop. We had dinner for less than other options in town. Mackinaw City is a tourist town that only has a few months to make most of their money for the year. So everything is a fair bit more expensive. With that said, we got a medium 4 topping pizza (8 slices) for $18. There is an added bonus of a nice museum on the second floor that you can learn all about the construction of the Mackinac Bridge, which for years was the longest suspension bridge in the world.

  • Hollie R.

Pizza was good, staff was friendly! Prices are pretty good, compared to other pizza places in the area. Wasn't the best pizza I've ever had (I'm from a town where pizza is a huge thing), but the fam was hungry and we needed something quick. We got the large Hawaiian for $20. It was a typical Hawaiian, nothing special, but still good!!

  • Chelsea P.

Ok but nothing special. The breadsticks look and taste like they use the breadsticks from a Pillsbury can and add butter and rosemary. The crust of the pizza tastes the same. The saving grace was the cheese and sauce on the pizza which was lacking. The museum is neat upstairs as well.

    (2)
  • Jessica D.

Very unprofessional, pizza was re-heated (they stated so while we were looking at the menu). Very dirty place. Would not come back

  • Andrea S.

I got the nachos and was disappointed in the amount of lettuce piled on top....I had to dig to get to the chips and other toppings, but it tasted great! The prices are a little high, but a restaurant down the road wanted more money for an omelet!! This is a tourist area and they can get away with the higher prices. The museum was ok, but the original museum had burned down a few years back so they lost a bunch of stuff. Overall, the staff was friendly, the food was good and when they get really busy, they get pretty creative about calling our your order number and it's obvious they are having fun!

STAY AWAY. There are enough other restaurants on the main drag there, don't punish yourself. You don't deserve it. Where should I begin.... The restaurant is clean, but this really is a minimal accomplishment these days; similar in achievement to completing 8th grade. I visited on sunday (8/10/14 about 1:00 pm). The guy at the counter was quite a douchebag (herein referenced as "DB") who fancied himself to be hosting a lounge act in Vegas which was neither cute nor charming. The guy in front of me wanted to pay with a credit card but did not have a drivers license. The DB would not accept his social security card as a form of ID. Although that seems ludicrous, it set the stage for the next part of db's act. DB stated that the customer would have to spell his last name backwards. The patron did (although with much difficulty) and was subject to ridicule from DB and a chance for DB to brag about how good he was at spelling his own name backwards. Bravo db. Bravo. After several minutes of this innane nonsense, it was my turn to experience db. When I paid in cash, db promptly took one of my 5 dollar bills and showed his impressive skill at identifying that the bill was produced in 1988 and commenting on how crisp this currency was. He then held the bill up to the light, insinuated that I was passing counterfeit bills, and lamented the fact that he didn't have his bill-checking pen. I was relieved when my time with DB came to an end. Then came the wait. Oh the interminable wait. As the proscribed 25-30 minute wait evolved into 50 minutes, I realized that a lone order had been placed on top of the oven and was just sitting there. They had never bothered to call my number. I surmised that this was not their concern, as I had already paid. I confronted the counter guy (not db) who unapologetically handed me the pizza. Very frustrating. The pizza was barely marginal at best. I would have preferred a frozen Tony's pizza (these are NOT wood-fired as somebody stated in the comments). The crostini was rather nasty, undercooked, and not as described on the menu. As I suspected, the "food" was WAY overpriced for how nasty it was. During all of this my wife sat outside waiting for me and was able to gauge the mood of the other patrons. They were all disappointed/disgusted and some furious. There was one woman who got up to go to the bathroom with her child and the staff promptly cleared away all of their food (approximately 1/2 of their entire order), but left their belongings (because they obviously weren't done). In summary: NASTY food RUDE staff Bad experience. Do not go here. They deserve to go out of business. They can only survive on tourists who are unaware what a s-hole this place is.

Friendly staff, food not worth the price, mashed potatoes were out of box. Should of tried a pizza.

If we hadn't been driving all day and were tired and hot we might have had more common sense and asked for our money back. We didn't have the pizza - instead we had the philly cheese steak, the Italian dip sandwhich, and the kids Mac and cheese. The only thing you could taste on the sandwhiches was the bread. The Mac and cheese that was served to our 3 year old was pathetic. It was noodles covered in a thick flavorless sauce that was like plastic. I felt like a bad parent feeding it to her. Total bill $30.... Will never come back

It's 10 PM in Mackinaw City. Do you know where you and your children are dining? Chances are it's Mama Mia's on the main drag up from the ferry dock. You can't possibly miss the restaurant, which shares a large building with the Mackinac Bridge Museum. You can just about orient yourself locally off the large carved wooden Native American out front and the TV perpetually broadcasting a black and white film on the construction of Big Mac a mile away. Signs announce Pizza! Pasta! Salad! Museum! with far too much enthusiasm in the windows, which about lured me in right there. Yes, the place holds a kitschy cafeteria feel and indeed, that is a chainsaw hanging from the ceiling near the order line. The story goes that Mama Mia/Mackinac Bridge Museum burnt down a few years ago. When the place rebuilt, memorabilia was purchased or donated. Little boys of all ages are sure to love the row of decorated hard hats. The regular menu contains pasta and pizza in spades, sandwiches, and a few salads to round out offerings. Late night choices are limited to pizzas and breadsticks. Word to the wise, skip the breadsticks unless you enjoy the greasy, cheesy bubbled cardboard that Domino's foisted on diners in yesteryear. Some people love them, some people hate them. I fall in the latter camp. My beau and I split the fajita pizza, a safe bet after a grueling post-rush hour drive up from southeast Michigan. Yes, it's not cheap -- with a drink each, the smallest size came out around $22. We got a squashed white, thinner crust slathered in meat, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and a melted mozzarella that formed more silly string than a 5-year-old's clown themed birthday party. Seriously, a knife and fork were not up to the task of turning processed vinyl goo into edible portions. That in and of itself was pretty fun. Our pizza came out at a temperature slightly lower than the surface of Venus. Obligatory parent warning: don't let hungry little ones dig right in. Distract them looking at the museum or playing in the arcade for the next fifteen minutes, otherwise you'll be stuck consoling them (and yourself) for the magmatic burns to your palate. Mama Mia's pizza wasn't much to write home about, other than being filling. The cheese really is a weird slagmonster in disguise, and I think it may try to crawl out of the travel fridge in our hotel to try and take over the world. Mayor Cheeseburger of McDonald's, meet Emperor Mozzarella. The breadsticks were abysmal. It does the trick in a pinch but I would recommend trying Pizza Palace for a tastier option. Note: This is not a fast place.

The staff are fine as is the cleanliness. However, it took forever to get our pizza. The crust, well it leaves a lot to be admired. It was underdone and the softness of it, made the rest of the pizza soggy. Not to mention the scant amount of pepperonis on it. Certainly would not come back here again. Find somewhere else in the city to eat. It's only saving grace was the fascinating Mackinac Bridge museum upstairs. Recommend seeing that.

Always a real treat to stop for pizza. Showed Miranda the iron workers museum. It was amazing how they built the Mac bridge.

If I were you, I would turn around and go to the Pizza Palace. It's across the street and by the fire department. Mama Mia's is just ok. The side salad is SMALL & expensive. The pizza is just okay. Not enough sauce and the crust is soft and chewy. The breadsticks and tasteless & the marinara dipping sauce is served cold. You eat off of styrofoam plates. The doors are open and flies are flying on the food. I give it 2 stars

Staff is friendly. Food is over priced for the portion size. $8 for a chicken sandwich and chips? Nope not again.

Pizza was only okay. Canned mushrooms were used instead of fresh. For the price, I would have expected better.

The other reviews are NUTS. I LOVE this pizza, in fact it's my favorite. Sadly I live 5 hours away and can't have it as much as I'd like. Down in suburbia I'm forced to have gross chain-store pizza, yuck. Mama Mia's is homemade, fresh and delicious! I miss it!

Horrible pizza. I thought I was eating frozen pizza. With the amount of time it took to make, I thought it'd be better. The staff wasnt the most approachable either.

  • Michael S.

First, let's be clear. The pizza is expensive and mediocre, the reviews are correct on that. However, the museum is a great tourist trap with a lot of interesting artifacts from the construction of the bridge. The pizza was a notch or two above edible, but at $22 for a small pizza with 3 toppings and 2 fountain drinks, it should have been a lot better. I'll give 2 stars for the pizza and 4 for the museum, so 3 sounds right.

Very friendly staff, pizza was better than average but not necessarily great. However, was quick and a fair value for the money spent. Have been there several times and will return in the future. A much better value then Dixie Salon in Mackinaw City. There is a nice museum upstairs that is centered around the Mackinaw Bridge.

Very charming Mackinac City eatery. Solid pizza, good spaghetti, friendly staff. Nice arcade collection and appealing museum highlighting the history of the area. Look forward to returning.

I wanted to respond to Edward's review about the museum- I wanted everyone to know that in 2005 there was a fire at Mama Mia's that took out everything! You would not have believed the museum back then! What I always think about with that fire was all of the things families had donated that were lost forever. And the walls downstairs were covered with regular antiques as well. And the collection of hard hats of so many men also peppered the walls above where you ordered. It looked very, very different. Sadly, what was lost in the museum were one of a kind items. They have done the best they can at this point to fill it again. My husband and I stop in on our way up to the up and back every year. We love it~ We love their Veggie Pizza. Stop in and hope you enjoy. mightymac.org/bridgemuse…

The pizza was actually really tasty and if you're looking for a real "authentic" Mackinaw City tourist trap, this will get the job done. Beyond that, the food took quite a while and because of the setup you don't even get your drinks until your pizza actually arrives.

If you've read some of my other reviews you'll know that I know pizza. I'm from Chicago. We've got pizza and I've tasted it all. So we're in Mackinaw City and the kids start screaming that they want pizza. Now it's important to state that I love Michigan. My family is from Michigan. I spent every holiday and all my summers in Michigan growing up. It's just a fact of life that the likelihood of getting great pizza in Mackinaw City is slim. We just spent a long weekend at the Grand Hotel, had a beautiful ferry ride on a beautiful cloudless crisp fall morning and we're driving down Main Street and Sara yells "There's a pizza joint daddy." We try to convince them to get KFC or a pastie but the decision was made. My expectations are low. We park and walk into this quite large restaurant and are met by an outspoken older gentleman who invites us in and starts telling us about the great pizza and free museum. I don't know why but I like the guy. You can tell he paid his dues. Weathered face, gravely voice and a slight limp in his walk. He directs us to the lady at the counter who will take our order. We order up a pitcher of pop and a couple of small pizzas and the lady says that we'll get about as much pizza if we only order one large and she'll split up the toppings so we all get what we want. The price was half of what we originally ordered. Hey. I thought this place was supposed to be a tourist trap. Why would she make a recommendation that cost us half the price. Maybe nobody told her about the tourist trap thing. So she tells us it will be ready in 20 minutes. We go upstairs to see the museum. Yeah it's a little cheesy with a bunch of junkie souvenirs but I wandered into the theater, yes a theater, and we watched a short movie about the making of the Mackinac Bridge. It was actually really good. Twenty minutes later we get our food and sit down. We play a game of I Spy and once I get past all the license plates on the walls it hits me. This place is a tribute to the bridge and all of the iron workers who built it. Kudos. Pizza was good and they have a free museum with a good movie. Apparently no one told these nice people that their restaurant is in a tourist trap. Dump the license plates on the wall and put up more bridge history and considering where we are I would give this place four stars. We'll be back next summer.

I can't believe in all the years I've lived in the area, I had never gone to Mama Mia's. We finally decided it was time to see what we had been missing. I wish we had tried it back when Tom S. was eating there! Perhaps the quality has slipped since the fire a few years back? The best way I can describe the pizza is "boring". It will satisfy kids, and it will fill you up. It is LOADED with low-quality cheese and the sauce is very sweet, which is a definite turn off for us. This is not a place for a quiet dinner. If you have a large group or several kids to feed, this would be a good place. Kids won't mind the chaos, and they can be as loud as they want. :) Otherwise, the ordering process- the yelling, bells ringing, and overall confusion is enough to spoil even a good pizza dinner. What is up with that ordering process anyway? I've never seen anything like it! There are no servers. You order your pizza at the counter, then wait for a table. While you are waiting for a table, you order your drinks at the bar. I did not understand the seating process, but after about 20 minutes we did get a table. Then, you continue waiting for your pizza. Our 2 large pizzas took over 35 minutes to complete. If you need soda refills, you wait in line at the bar again. Finally, your number is called and you go to the window to pick up the pizza yourself. I am giving this establishment 2 stars - one for kid-friendliness, and one for the collection of Mackinac Bridge history upstairs. It is small, and unfortunately somewhat overrun by the odd assortment of knick-knacks in the gift shop. But if you have any connection to the building of the bridge, then that is what makes this place special.

This place burnt down several years ago and it is not the same since it reopened. Service is marginal, atmosphere is hectic and the pizza is meh. Walk 2 blocks north to the Keyhole, you wont be disappointed.

  • Eric M.

Besides my wife seeing the cook flipping off someones order. The pizza was above average rating the $5 pick up pizza as average. Atmosphere was good with the hard hats of bridge builders everywhere.
